David O. Loyd, of Meigs, died Sunday, June 19, 2022, after a brave and extended battle against cancer. He was 87-years-old.
A memorial service will be held at Zion Grove Assembly of God Church in Meigs, GA at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 23, 2022. The family will greet friends following the service.
David was born in Colquitt County on March 25, 1935. His job as a United States Department of Agriculture Food Inspector required him to move a number of times over the years. However, his work eventually brought him back to Colquitt County where he worked until his retirement following a distinguished 42-year career with the USDA.
In addition to his full-time work with the federal government, David spent some years ministering as an assistant pastor while he and his family lived in Ocala, Fla. David’s approach to ministry was first and foremost demonstrating the love of God through a compassionate, nonjudgmental approach that led countless lives to Salvation and earned him the trust and admiration of many friends through the years. Additionally, he spent years in leadership roles at Zion Grove Assembly of God, a church in Colquitt County his family helped establish.
Both relatives and friends remember David as a man who devoted himself to the service of others, who selflessly gave of his time and talents to his family, friends, community and church.
David’s legacy of love extended well beyond humans. He had great compassion for animals. From household pets to wildlife, David made sure they were protected and cared for on his farmland. In the late 1970’s, he bought a portion of his father’s Charolais cattle herd and kept that bloodline going until last year when his health struggles forced him to stop cattle farming.
David was also admired for his abilities to solve problems with his gifted mechanical touch. He had the talent of being able to repair most anything at home or on the farm. He relished the challenge of taking an old piece of farm equipment that most everyone had given up on and restoring it to working order.
David was preceded in death by his mother, Irene Williams Cummings; his father Olan Henry Loyd and stepmother Ruby Benton Loyd; his sister Gwendolyn Loyd Holland; and his dearly loved grandparents Joseph Elijah and Ella Vaughn Loyd.
David is survived by his wife, Geneva Griner Loyd, to whom he was married 65 years. The couple would have celebrated 66-years of marriage on June 30. Additional survivors include his daughter Melanie Loyd and husband Todd Robinson; his son Greg Loyd; his sisters Jean Griner (Odell) and Mary Riley (Duane); his brother Todd Cummings (Scarlett); and a number of extended family members and friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Hospital, P. O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN, 38148-0142, or a charity of choice.
