MOULTRIE, GA – Rev. Herbert Lee Waid, 92, of Moultrie, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at Colquitt Regional Senior Care and Rehabilitation Center in Moultrie.
A graveside service will be held at Cobb-Suncrest Memorial Gardens on April 9, 2025 at 11:00 am. Rev. Randy Jackson officiating.
Born on November 12, 1932, in Bloomington, IL, he was a son of the late Lionel Samuel Waid and Beulah Mae McCubbin Waid. He grew up in Detroit, MI. Herbert married Geraldine Gay on July 23, 1954 in Nashville, TN.
Herbert was ordained to the Gospel ministry after graduating from the Free Will Baptist Bible College, Nashville, TN. Herbert served the Rains Crossroads Free Will Baptist Church and the Pine Level Free Will Baptist Church in Eastern NC from 1955-58.
In August 1958, Herbert, his wife and three young children, moved to Tokyo, Japan where he served as a missionary for 17 years. Two additional daughters were born in Tokyo.
In 1975, Herbert left the Foreign Missions Board to become the pastor at Corinth Free Will Baptist Church in Brookfield, GA. In 1979, he accepted a call to be the pastor of the First Free Will Baptist Church of Valdosta, GA.
In 1985, Herbert accepted the position of Executive Secretary of the Georgia State Association of Free Will Baptists and moved to Moultrie. He held that position until his retirement.
Upon his retirement, he began his pastorate at Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church in Albany, GA where he served for 25 years. He continued to serve the church until January 2025. He was a true servant of God, having spent his entire adult life as a Minister in the Free Will Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Stanley Waid; sisters, Donna Darlene Waid Alder and Glenda Waid; daughter-in-law, Anne Coad Waid; and son-in-law, Daniel McVety.
He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Gay Waid; children, Nancy Thiessen (husband, Royce), Peter Waid, Darlene McVety, Penelope Wilkinson (husband, Kevin) and Amy Dykxhoorn (husband, Jacob); fifteen grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family.
