Iverson Robert Aultman, Sr., passed away on September 10, 2021, at his home in Moultrie, Georgia.
Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Moultrie at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, September 16, 2021. All are encouraged to attend, but please respect the family’s wishes and be prepared to wear masks in the sanctuary.
Born on May 7, 1947, in Moultrie, he was the son of the late Iverson Rhett “Ike” Aultman and the late Dorothy Louise Aultman (née McFarlane). Robert grew up in Moultrie and graduated from Moultrie High School before going on to study at the University of Georgia. Robert served in the U.S. Army as a Medical Specialist and eventually graduated from UGA in 1972 with a B.S. in Zoology. After graduation, he returned to Moultrie to teach science at Colquitt County Junior High School. Robert met his wife Patsy - also a science teacher at the Junior High - and they married in 1974. Robert studied alongside Patsy at Georgia Southwestern College to complete his Master of Education in 1977. Robert also completed an Education Specialist degree from Valdosta State College in 1986. During his 16 years working for Colquitt County schools, Robert made significant contributions outside the classroom. He worked with his close friend, Jim McGilvray, to start the 8th grade women’s basketball program. Aultman started the Colquitt County Cross Country program, quickly building it into the top program in the region and regularly competing in state finals. He also coached track and field. The whole family spent countless hours in the gym and on the road for games and races. Robert and Patsy opened their home and their hearts to their students and athletes and built lifelong relationships with many of the young people who passed through their care in Moultrie. In 1988, Robert moved with his family to Watkinsville, Georgia, and enrolled at UGA again to complete doctoral studies in the Department of Science Education. Robert returned to the classroom in 1989 teaching physical science and environmental science at Oconee County High School. As he did in Moultrie, Robert built a cross country program from scratch and also coached track and field at OCHS. Through his 17 years at OCHS, Aultman led his girl’s cross-country team to runner-up at the state championship and helped coach the girls track and field team to a state championship. Coach Aultman accumulated numerous regional titles with all of his teams and was even honored by the Georgia General Assembly (1994 HB1182) for his contributions as a teacher and a coach. More important than any of the awards, Robert valued the relationships he built with all of the kids he had the opportunity to influence as a coach, mentor, and teacher. After retirement, Robert continued his quest for knowledge and obtained another degree from Gainesville State College in Applied Environmental Spatial Analysis and a GIS certificate. He and Patsy moved back to Moultrie in 2010. In Moultrie, Robert taught GIS courses and coached youth girls’ basketball again alongside his good friend James Stancil. He and Patsy enjoyed spending the last decade in Moultrie surrounded by old friends and watching Packer sports. Above all, Aultman was a committed husband, a loving father, and a dedicated friend.
Robert was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church of Moultrie and Kiwanis Club of Moultrie.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Lallie Patricia “Patsy” Bulloch Aultman. Robert is survived by his two children, Bert Aultman and wife Sara Towner of Annapolis, Md., and daughter Katy Aultman of Atlanta, Ga.; his brother Stuart Aultman and wife Karen of Inverness, Fl.; and his honorary granddaughter, Ada James Norman. Additionally, the family would like to thank Carol Mathis and Sandra Blackwell for their service and care for Robert and Patsy in their later years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kiwanis Club of Moultrie (P.O. Box 1421, Moultrie, Ga 31776).
