Martha Ann Southerland Sherman

MOULTRIE, GA. – Martha Ann Southerland Sherman, 95, of Moultrie, passed away peacefully with family on Saturday, July 23, 2022. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, July 26, 2022, at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church with Rev. Dr. Stan Christian and Rev. Walter Hobgood officiating. The family will receive friends in the church sanctuary one prior to the service. Casketbearers will be John Koskinen, Jacob Sherman, Justin Odom, Brian Bass, Ray Lawton and Gavin Henderson. Born February 11, 1927, in Berlin, GA, she was the daughter of the late Eugene Augustus Southerland and Ida Belle Coleman Southerland. Mrs. Sherman moved to Moultrie at an early age and graduated from Moultrie High School in 1944 and the University of Georgia in 1948. In 1949, she married Wesley Sherman of Connecticut and they moved to Indiana where she worked in radio and early television before moving to the Washington, D.C. area where she lived for 34 years before retiring back to Moultrie. Mrs. Sherman was a former member of the Federated Guild, a member of the Humane Society and a founding member of Saint Margaret’s Episcopal Church where she served on the Vestry, the Altar Guild and was a reader. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Eugene Southerland, Donald Southerland and sister, Dorothy Bell. Survivors include her children, Julia Sherman of New Bern, NC, Wesley “Beau” Sherman and wife Sherri of Moultrie and Rev. Eugene Sherman and wife Kimberly of Avon Lake, OH; grandchildren, John Koskinen and wife Morgan of Fayetteville, NC, Rebecca Hampe and husband George of New York, NY, Zackery Sherman and wife Mary of Stow, OH, Benjamin Sherman and wife Amy of Elyria, OH, Daniel Sherman and wife Marissa of St. Clair Shores, MI, Jacob Sherman of Herndon, VA, Paige Odom and husband Justin of Tifton, Brooke Walton and husband Brian of Moultrie; 8 great grandchildren; and special niece, Donna Martin and husband Richard of Moultrie.
