Roberta Jo Rutherford Moak, aged 92, passed away peacefully on September 15th, 2021 at her home in Moultrie, GA.
To celebrate and honor the life of Roberta, family and friends are invited to First Baptist Church Moultrie, from 10:00-11:00 AM on September 17th for viewing and visitation. The funeral service will follow at 11:00am.
Casketbearers will be Kyle Conger, Daniel Moak, Jacob Conger, Eric Buer, Reid Smith, John Montgomery, Jeff Montgomery and Rich Rutherford.
She was born on November 21st, 1928, in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Ada and John Alfred Rutherford. Roberta moved to Hollywood, Florida with her family where she met the one true love of her life, J.E. Moak in 1945 at First Baptist Church, Hollywood. They were married on June 7th, 1947. She graduated from Mississippi College in 1951 with her BA in Education and continued her studies in Library Science at Valdosta State University; she went on to work as a media specialist and teacher of English, Math, and Music. Roberta was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend; she truly cared about people and enjoyed serving others. She expressed her exceptional creativity and attention to detail through cooking, baking, sewing, and chronicling over 75 years of family history through 60 illustrated albums. Her albums served not only her immediate family, but also her church family as she functioned as the unofficial First Baptist historian. Her passion for history extended into her enthusiastic participation in DAR. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Moultrie for 58 years where she sang in the choir with the “Pit Crew” and played piano for Sunday School classes. She also served faithfully as the church librarian up until 2021 and was an active member of WMU.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 62 years, Reverend J.E. Moak, Jr., her siblings John Alfred Rutherford Jr. and Virginia Rutherford Montgomery, and her grandson, Wesley Owen Smith.
She is survived by her brother Richard Taylor Rutherford, Sr. (Janet Rutherford), children: Mark Stephen Moak (Rhett Smith Moak) and Mary Ann Moak Smith (Jack C Smith, Jr.), her grandchildren: Leah Smith Moak (Cody Hoover), Laura Braswell Conger (Kyle Conger), Reid Carlton Smith (Anisha Kapadia), Daniel Stephen Moak, and Ellen Moak Buer (Eric Buer), great-grandchildren: Jacob Ethan Conger, Kathryn Lane Conger, Elizabeth Jane Conger, Luke Dean Conger, Gigi Shalesh Smith, and Lark Wesley Hoover, numerous nieces and nephews, and loyal kitty Smokey Moak.
