Shirley "Grunt" Carter

April 29, 1937 — August 12, 2022

Shirley May Barrineau “Grunt” Carter, 85, of Moultrie, passed away on Friday, August 12, 2022, at Colquitt Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Monday, August 15, 2022, at Cobb Funeral Chapel with Dr. Robert McCoy officiating.  Private interment will follow in Pinecrest Memory Gardens. The family will greet friends in the chapel one hour prior to the service.

Casketbearers will be Dusty Brazel, Clint Murphy, Aaron Willis, James Cooper, Dr. Witemba Kabange, and Tanner Anderson. Honorary casketbearers will be Matthew Hayes and Carter Brazel.

Grunt was born April 29, 1937, in Charleston, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Harry Barrineau and Henrietta Corrine Ricker Barrineau.  She enjoyed playing BINGO, listening to Merle Haggard, drinking Diet Pepsi, and watching Days of Our Lives.  She loved to visit her hometown of Charleston, South Carolina.  Grunt loved her family deeply, was strong-willed, sassy, and gruff in the best kind of way.

Survivors include her daughters, Debra C. Hayes and husband Tim, Yvonne C. Flowers Hayes and husband Keith, all of Moultrie, and Michelle Messa of New Jersey; granddaughters, Rebecca Hayes, Erin Flowers Brazel and husband Dusty, Kimberly Hayes, Sarah Flowers Murphy and husband Clint, Abby Flowers Willis and husband Aaron, Morgan Hayes Cooper and husband James; great-grandchildren, Tanner Anderson, Carter Brazel, Matthew Hayes, Everley Willis, Rivers Murphy, Eliza Jane Brazel, Josiah Hayes, Charley Willis; special friend, Abigail Mercado; brother, George Barrineau; grandcat furbabies, Ruby and Chloe.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Milton E. Carter; brothers, Johnny Barrineau and Bernard Barrineau; sister, Vivian Walker; son-in-law, Roger Flowers; great-grandchildren, Jonah Bentley Willis, Harper Bailey Willis, Emersyn Kate Willis, and Tate Henry Murphy.

Memorial contributions may be made to Autreyville Baptist Church, 2434 GA 33, Moultrie, GA 31788.
