Torey E. Wingate, Jr., 92, of Doerun, joined his lovely wife Lil in heaven on Friday, October 15, 2021, at his residence.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, October 18, 2021, at First Baptist Church of Doerun with Dr. David Benton officiating. The funeral service will conclude at the church. Interment will be in Cobb-Suncrest Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 10:00-10:45 AM Monday at the church.
The grandchildren and great-grandchildren will serve as honorary casketbearers.
Born December 6, 1928, in Doerun, Georgia, he was the son of the late Torey E. Wingate, Sr. and Delia Hatcher Wingate. After graduating from high school, he attended North Georgia College and South Georgia Teachers’ College in Statesboro. Upon returning home he began a career in the agricultural field which grew into a lifelong love of farming. During the past few days he was making preparations to plant his traditional fall garden. Mr. Jr. and Mrs. Lil always had a bountiful harvest of homegrown vegetables which they graciously shared throughout the community. The couple was known throughout Colquitt County, as they enjoyed eating out and cheerfully visiting with friends in all the assisted living and nursing facilities. He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Doerun.
In addition to his parents, his was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Lillian Pearl Reagan Wingate; sisters, Lyda Bubenheim, Myrtice Barnham, and Agnes Reed; pet pigeon, Woo Woo.
Survivors include their children, Torey E. Wingate, III and wife Ingrid, Gettis Joe Wingate and wife Charlotte, Velvet Wingate Brooks and husband Chuck all of Doerun; grandchildren, Monica W. Lewis and husband Fulton, Eric Wingate and wife Stella, Mandy Kinsey and husband Kevin, Garrett Wingate and wife Brooke, Clayton Brooks and wife Sam; great-grandchildren, Ben Lewis, Davis Lewis, Bowen Lewis, Thad Wingate, Wynn Kinsey, Rynn Kinsey, Garron Wingate, Davis Wingate; several nieces, nephews and other family members.
