MOULTRIE, GA – John Marion Mathis, 87, of Moultrie, passed away Thursday, January 12, 2023, at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at First Baptist Church of Moultrie with the Reverend Matt Peek and the Reverend Julian Griner officiating. Interment will follow in Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Monday, January 16, 2023, at Cobb Funeral Chapel.
Casketbearers will be Stephen Tyus, Haden Lee Mathis, Raybun Folsom, Lavon Stripling, Judd Cato, Bob Craft, Frank Henson, Danny Parker, Thomas Hody Rutland, Charles Stines, and Jim Tucker. First Baptist Church Adult 10 Sunday School Class members and the Employees of Eagles of America will serve as honorary casketbearers.
Born October 19, 1935, in Adel Georgia, he was the son of the late Fred Mathis and Lettie Hires Mathis. Mr. Mathis retired as a banker from Moultrie Federal Saving Bank and Southwest Georgia Bank with 38 years of service. He was a United States Navy Veteran who served on the USS Coral Sea. Mr. Mathis was a devout Christian and an active member of First Baptist Church of Moultrie. He was a deacon and served as chairman of the deacons, sang in the church choir, a Sunday School teacher, and a training union director. He was a dedicated father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and excellent mentor, who at the age of 14 made a profession of faith and his parents followed him down the church aisle making their profession of faith. Mr. Mathis worked at Eagles of America at the Moultrie Airport from 2001-2019. He had a monumental impact on the citizens of Colquitt County, and he will be truly missed by many.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years and 10 months and love of his life, Charlotte Stripling Mathis; brothers-in-law, Donnie Stripling and wife Linda, Lane Whitley.
Survivors include his children, Cindy Leigh Mathis Tyus and husband Steve, Alan Lee Mathis and wife Dena all of Moultrie; grandchildren, Leigh Anna Tyus Peek and husband Matt, Stephen Mathis Tyus and wife Emily, Julie Anne Tyus, Haden Lee Blevins Mathis; great-grandchildren, Maddie Claire Peek, John David Peek, Ellie Peek, Ruthie Peek, Nathan Tyus, Whitney Tyus; sister, Joan Mathis Folsom and husband Raybun of Warwick, GA; brother-in-law, Lavon Stripling and wife Beth of Moultrie, GA; sister-in-law, Debby Stripling Whitley of Moultrie; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members and friends.
